Zero (Halloween Havoc no. 3)

It moved through the tunnels, gliding along its damp surface with ease. Light and sounds ahead, a woman laughing and the sounds of combat. It reached the light at the end of the tunnel and paused at the iron grating. It could have easily slipped through, but all it did was watch for now.

Lady Midnight and Amazing Babe looked at each other and nodded, each of them with an arm wrapped around the thick neck of a hulking, pale skinned abomination. The creature growled defiantly in the grip of the heroines and tried to pushed back, but Lady Midnight slammed her gloved fist into the thing's tender ribs and looked at Amazing Babe. "Now!"

As one, they lifted with their thick, muscular legs and the creature was perpendicular to the ground before the heroines fell back and slammed the creature onto the ground, which was littered with bones. The costumed heroines kicked up, looked at each and nodded, and then jumped back at the same time, dropping their elbows on the creature's face and knocking it out cold. Lady Midnight took a deep breath and nodded to her young companion. Amazing Babe smiled and pushed her blonde hair back, and they both looked up at the edge of the pit with determined looks in their eyes.

"...Okay, so you won that one..." Dragon Queen seethed, putting her hands on her shapely hips. She tapped a slender finger on a small remote on her hand.

"The game is up, Dragon Queen. Surrender and you'll be able to walk out under your own power," Lady Midnight said to her.

"That's cute. You think I'm done," Dragon Queen laughed. She then pressed a button on the remote and the floor beneath the heroines opened. They screamed out of surprise as they tumbled into the darkness below.

"Bitches..." Dragon Queen growled, spitting at her defeated creature as she walked away.

When she walked away from the pit, the thing in the tunnels slipped away.

"Time to deal with these fools for good..." she said, pausing and turning around.

"Enough of your games, Dragon Queen!" Lady Midnight shouted at microphones that she knew to be hidden throughout the room.

"Come down here and face us yourself!" Amazing Babe added. The two of them stood in yet another pit, this one with a stone floor.

Dragon Queen entered the chamber and walked to the edge of the pit. "You spandex-wearing cows walk into my facility and make demands? It's Halloween, isn't it Nightmare Witch's turn to be harassed by you bunch of idiots?"

"Come on now, Dragon Queen, you know you're my favorite psycho," Lady Midnight taunted. "Besides, the kid here has never met you," she pointed at Amazing Babe.

Dragon Queen smirked and put her hands in her pockets. "Well, you idiots interrupted my Twilight Zone marathon, and I take that especially personally, so you will pay. You may have beaten my latest creation, but I don't think I ever used this next one with any of you," she said before raising the remote again and pressing a button.

Lady Midnight and Amazing Babe then found themselves sprayed with a strange colorless, odorless mist that left them more confused than anything. The two heroines looked at each other and then turned to Dragon Queen.

"If you're thinking of getting into the perfume business, I wouldn't," Lady Midnight said.

Dragon Queen pressed another button and doorways all around the pit opened. Small, goblin-like creatures roughly three and a half feet tall with scaly green skin began filing out and the heroines were completely surrounded before long. "Keep fighting. Don't let them get you on the ground..." Lady Midnight warned.

The creatures closed in on the heroines, and Dragon Queen smiled. She then got up and straightened her robe. "I'll watch the video in the morning. I'm going back to my marathon and then I'm going to bed. Toodles, ladies," she waved mockingly before walking away as the goblin-things screeched and swarmed the heroines right when Dragon Queen walked out.

It watched her as she walked down the halls. Her passing activated the motion lights. When she looked back, it ducked and hid. When she paused and looked in its direction, it stayed absolutely still. When she kept walking, it followed, keeping its distance and waiting for the right time.

The lights turned on in the small kitchen Dragon Queen kept in this facility and she made a slow walk toward the refrigerator, unable to shake the feeling that there were eyes on her. Her bare feet were silent on the cool, metal floor. She controlled her breathing, even as the feeling of being watched continued hanging over her. She grabbed a carton of ice cream, chocolate mint, from the freezer and then a spoon from the drawer, and when she looked up, she gasped at what she was sure was movement in the shadows. A blur of white against the creeping dark.

She stayed perfectly still, not even daring to blink, and watched for several long, agonizingly quiet seconds.

It watched her standing there staring in its direction, but it was concealed by shadow. It could taste the fear she had of knowing something was there without seeing it. It could see the tension in her shoulders, in her posture.

It would savor her screams and the taste of her body next.

Dragon Queen didn't feel the pint of ice cream slip out of her hand. She was too focused on the tall, bipedal creature that emerged from the shadows of one of the hallways that branched off from the kitchen. Its skin was as white as snow, its limbs were long, and its eyes were as black as the shadows it just stepped out of.

It stood and watched her, not even flinching when her ear-splitting scream filled the kitchen, and it didn't immediately chase her when she turned and took off down the other hallway that branched from the kitchen.

But when she looked back, it was behind her, walking at a deliberate pace. Dragon Queen ran as fast as her legs would carry her, her heart pounded in her chest, and the motion lights flickered on in rapid succession as she ran down the halls of her facility. She fumbled in the pocket of her robe for her remote and then slid to a stop once she put some distance between herself and the creature.

She watched it as it lowered its head and began to pick up speed toward her, and when it covered a certain distance, she pressed a button. Jets of flame spewed from a series of nozzles in the ceiling above the creature, completely engulfing it. It didn't make any sound as it vanished in the dancing flame, and Dragon Queen stepped back and watched with bated breath.

She then screamed a curse when the creature emerged from the flame, completely unharmed, and continued toward her. She turned and continued running.

The flame could not kill it. It didn't even hurt.

She took the time to finally breathe, only to jump when something slammed into the roof of elevator. She scrambled to a different corner when there was repeated slamming and stared at the spot where she thought it was coming from. The minute the elevator reached its destination, she was on her feet and through the doors once the gap was big enough. The roof collapsed inward and the creature landed on its feet and walked out.

Dragon Queen backed away, leading it into a spacious research facility with equipment and tools scattered all over the room. It paused and looked around, and Dragon Queen kept her eyes on it. "I don't know what you are," the villainess said, a sudden boldness in her voice, but this ends now!" She pressed a button on her remote again, and a large gate on the far wall opened. A deep growl sounded from the darkness before a massive monster came rushing out. Its body was solid muscle and its mouth was full of sharp fangs. It charged past Dragon Queen and at the strange invader, rage in its roars as it thundered across the room.

This was one of her new creatures. A slavering brute whose mind was not formed. A pathetic beast enslaved by its instincts.

Dragon Queen's monster closed in on the black eyed invader and lunged at it. Its body then stiffened as it yelped out a shill cry and froze in place. Then it slumped over and hit the ground with a massive thud, and the black-eyed creature looked at Dragon Queen while holding up its right arm. Its hand had transformed into a massive spike that it pulled from the giant beast's thick skull. The spike shifted back into a hand and the creature continued approaching Dragon Queen.

"No...no!" Dragon Queen cried out, backing into a table of computer equipment. "Who the hell are you?!"

It paused, looking her up and down for several long, quiet seconds. "Zero," it finally answered. "You created me."

Dragon Queen's jaw dropped.

"I was your first. Once a man, a life I have now forgotten. You remade me. Called me Zero."

It was coming back to her. A small lab somewhere in Delta City, nearly 15 years ago. She couldn't remember where she got the test subject, and the formulas she used in the process got lost in a fight with some heroine or another. "I am not interested in you," He told them.

"Well, too bad, because she's coming with us," Lady Midnight pointed.

"Then we fight..."

Lady Midnight slipped past a punch Zero threw and stabbed him in the arm with the injector. He grunted and his arm bulged slightly, but nothing happened beyond that. Lady Midnight froze as she and Amazing Babe stepped back.

"You lied to us!" Lady Midnight yelled.

"It should've worked!" Dragon Queen fired back.

"I have wandered the world far and wide in these long years. I have seen things you wouldn't believe. I have evolved beyond what you made me. I am not so easily destroyed," Zero said simply before stepping to the heroines. He attacked and they scattered, and as they fought, Dragon Queen saw her chance to leave. The door the heroines came in through was the only way out, and with them and Zero distracting each other, she moved toward it, determined to slip away unnoticed.

She heard fighting, grunting, people getting hit. She didn't dare look back as she got closer to the doorway. The minute she reached it, she jumped at something slamming into the wall next to her. Dragon Queen paused and saw Lady Midnight slumped over on the floor, unconscious. Now she couldn't help but turn back.

Lady Midnight shrugged. "I can set these computers to self wipe, so we don't need to stick around. Let's get pizza and watch slasher movies at HQ."

"I...those movies scare me..."

Lady Midnight grinned. "Good, because I wasn't asking," she said before grabbing Amazing Babe by her arm and dragging her out after setting the system to delete everything.

Dragon Queen opened her eyes to dim lighting and rank odor, and she immediately jumped when she noticed a multitude of eyes watching her. She was surrounded by all manner or strange creatures: mutants, robots, and other assorted monstrosities. She sat up and crawled back until she came to a wall. The creatures never stopped eyeing her, but none of them ever moved toward her.

The room was made of stone and was cold and damp. It took a few seconds, but Dragon Queen eventually realized she was somewhere in a disused section of the city's sewer system. She made her own lairs and hideouts in plenty such places to lure those damn Aphrodites to their doom.

"Who are you all?" the villainess demanded, receiving no answers from any of them. Just then, she noticed the small crowd of creatures part as Zero walked to the front of the crowd. He stood several feet away from Dragon Queen and held out his arms.

"They are my flock."

Dragon Queen simply stared at him in confusion.

"For years, scientists and madmen like you created life to do your bidding, then discarded it when it no longer suited your purposes. Some of us are killed by the Aphrodites, some of us are captured by your governments, never to be seen again, far too many of us end up here, in the forgotten places..." he said, motioning to the room around them.

"Just as you discarded me, people like Pervo and the Geek have forgotten their creations and cast them aside."

Dragon Queen looked at the gathered creatures again, and her heart sank when she recognized some of them as creatures created long ago by some of her fellow villains. She recognized some of Pervo's mutants and the Geek's robots among the crowd.

"But we have found each other," Zero said. "This network of abandoned tunnels stretches across the city, and there are thousands of us. I have brought us together, and in turn, they allow me to guide them. After you abandoned me, I traveled this cruel, ridiculous world and have met heroes and monsters alike. I befriended some, defeated many, many more, and now I have come home to guide the lost. You will help me do so."

"Anything," Dragon Queen said quickly, seeing it as her only way to get in their good graces until she could escape these tunnels.

Zero smirked. "Good." He turned to two monsters on his side and nodded, and the creatures approached the villainess and grabbed her by her arms. They both easily dwarfed the villainess. 

"What are you doing?" Dragon Queen looked at the creatures.

"We do not seek retribution against the Aphrodites. They were simply protecting their own in fighting us. We only want to grow our family, and you will help us do that. Many of my flock were created specifically for breeding. You made me sterile, but many here are quite virile, I assure you."

Dragon Queen went pale and she looked at the two hulking creatures that held her. "No! NOO!" she screamed, trying to get free. The monsters behind Zero began laughed and cheered as one of the creatures ripped off her filthy robe and tossed it aside, exposing her naked body for all to see. The thing pawed at her breasts and licked its lips as it chuckled a deep, throaty chuckle. She kicked, screamed, and swore as she was dragged off to another section of the tunnels with the horde of monsters following close behind.

Zero waited until the room was empty. A smile then crossed his face as he walked off to join the rest of them.
