The Alternative: Fausta

Part 7

By

Craig Weston

I enter Fausta's office, she and Von Strom were in conversation. The general turns to greet me as I snap to attention. “At ease – Captain,” he grins then shakes my hand.

“General? – I,” I stammer, lost for words.

“Congratulations Captain, you have earned it. Ze Fuhrer is delighted with you. Und ze outstanding vork you have done here vith Frauline Grables, it vill lead us to victory.” I glance over to Fausta who remains silent. Her words from our meeting still echo in my mind:

“Yes lieutenant,” Fausta spoke putting down her coffee cup and taking the folder from my still shaking hands.“For Vonder Voman, You Are indeed ze vone. You are also the specially chosen individual. Chosen, Personally by the Fuhrer. Und as I told you. You could be the key to total Victory.”

“Captain, please have a seat, I haff news.” Von Strom's voice kicks me back to reality as he signals for me to sit. Our time here is coming to an end. I haff received orders from Berlin. In 48 hours Vonder Voman vill be escorted to a special facility vhere she vill be vell cared for und the research vill continue.  Ze Fuhrer is eager zat she and ze surrogates vill be equally vell cared for, so it has been decided to have them  housed at different locations for security, und safety from allied bombings. Ze Fuhrer is also eager zat ve ensure that Vonder Voman is impregnated as soon as possible. After vhich the exact location of Vonder Voman's home is to be confirmed. Vonce zis is done ze special commando vill be initated for the invasion of her home und subjugation of her people. They vill then become part of ze Reich breeding program. Fraulein, ze Fuhrer has instructed  zat is your final task, you vill complete it today.”

“Yes, yes of course general.” Fausta replies, though I detect something in her voice.

“Goot, then ve shall celebrate.” Von Strom presses a button on the desk, the weaselly looking sergeant appears snapping to attention as he enters. “ Ze Cognac Hans,”  Von Strom orders. The sergeant snaps to attention once more and leaves appearing minutes later with a tray of three glasses of cognac.

“My friends,” Von Strom begins. “It has been an honour to serve vith you. To you both, und to Victory.”

“To Victory,” Fausta and I reply in unison, her eyes catch mine as she sips the glass.

Shortly after the meeting Von Strom orders me to report to the medical bay for a check up. He is eager to ensure I am in good health following, in his words: 'My rather Vigorous encounter with Vonder Voman.' Something that clearly gave him much pleasure to watch. Und, because I vas now the specially selected individual that vill impregnate her.

“Thank you lieutenant you can put your shirt back on,” the doctor places his stethoscope down and begins to make some notes. “You appear to be in excellent health... All things considered.” He grins. “The bruises are healing well, as are the lacerations. Are you in any pain?”

“Yes doctor, my back especially.”

“After all those gymnastics, I am not  at all surprised,” he quips giving me a wink. “I vill prescribe some strong pain killers and advise you rest for at least 48 hours. I vill inform the general and be back shortly.” The doctor returns vith a small box of pills. “These vill help with the pain, no more than 1 every 8 hours.”

“Thank you doctor. I will be mindful of your instructions.” Shortly after returning to my quarters there is a knock at the door. I open it to find the weaselly looking sergeant outside holding my uniform now showing the rank insignia of a captain. “The general's compliments sir. May I hang it up for you?”

“Of course, thank you sergeant. And please pass on my thanks to the general for his courtesy.”

“Very good sir,” the sergeant replies, placing the uniform carefully in the cupboard. Then snaps to attention once more. “Will there being anything else sir?”

“No, thank you sergeant.”

“Captain, Frauline Grables has requested you join her in her laboratory, I can show you the vay if you vish?”

As I follow the sergeant, it occurs to me that I had never been to Fausta's lab before today. It lay on the far side of the castle not far from Vonder Voman's cell, I enter to find Fausta at a desk, she has white lab coat on and is scrutinising some papers at her desk, she turns in her chair as I enter, thanks the sergeant, who snaps to attention and leaves. Fausta moves to the door looks about nervously then the beckons me over to the far end of the laboratory.

“I must talk to you – zere is something you – must know.” Fausta is visibly nervous and begins to pace about the laboratory, I have observed this before, but, this time there is something different.

“Last night I showed you the Progeny file, und told you that you could be the key to total Victory.”

“And how exactly am I to be the key to victory Frauline?”

Fausta began pacing again, as if trying to choose her response. “By ze curse of Hera, of course. You see. Vhat is not known to ze general – is zat ze curse is much, much more than just ze humiliation of capture. It also –  makes ze voman super fertile to becoming pregnant. Und ze baby, ze baby vhen it is born is always a girl.” Fausta steps up to me her breasts heaving under the lab coat. “So you see – Not only ver you powerfully drawn to Vonder Voman. Not only ver you biochemically linked. Ze curse, as I said made her incredibly fertile.  Und –  after your time vith her – She is now vith child – Your Child!”

The statement hits me like I have been run over by a tank. My legs become like rubber unable to support me. My back hits the wall  just behind me, I slide down it until I hit the floor. “My child!”

“Zat is not all,” Fausta whispers crouching beside me. She takes my hand and places it upon her stomach. “I too – carry your child, you are also – ze vone for me.”

I vant to ask how it is even possible but, something within tells me that it is.

“Vhen I sysnthesised the curse of Hera chemical from that found on Vonder Voman, I used it in a very concentrated form. That time vhen ve deceived you, und you thought I vas her, you took me. At zat point I too became bio chemically linked to you. Und ze second time vhen you took me in your quarters! I had not taken ze antidote.”

My body shakes, my face now in my hands the whole world is now crushing down upon me at these revelations. 'My Child! –  My Children!' Slowly I Lift my head und stare into Fausta's green eyes, “Does Von Strom know?”

Fausta shakes her head, “I haff not told him about Vonder Voman or – about me.”

“Then, then that at least gives us some time,” I say struggling to my feet, my mind races and then an insane resolve possesses me.

“Time for vhat?”

“Let me think,” I say pulling myself up. “Vhere are your research notes?” Fausta heads over to a corner of the lab opens a small cupboard door and points to the safe within. “Open it.”

Fausta complies turning the large dial with audible clicks, then opens the heavy door. Inside is a large black journal and a small dark sack, inside are Vonder Voman's items, the belt, lasso, head band and bracelets. “Zis ist my journal containing all my research und interrogation notes.” Fausta explains as I flip through the pages. Very thorough notes regarding the capture, subsequent medical examination. Then the interrogation notes covering Vonder Voman, her people, their history und culture. Und  also the coordinates – the exact latitude and longitude of  Paradise Island – her home!

“You've had these all along! Und didn't tell Von Strom?”

Fausta began to pace again then spun around her green eyes blazing. “Vhen I started zis I vas proud to be part of it. Proud to have captured ze mighty Vonder Voman. Proud zat I brought her to her knees in front of me, using her lasso. Proud that I compelled her into doing my bidding. She answered all my questions, I had her subjected to more experiments. But as ze days passed und I got to know her, und about her people, I began to have doubts about my vork. Und vhen I discovered vhat vas being planned for her, und her people – I knew I could not be part of zhat. I Vill Not be part of zhat. I told Von Strom zhat I had not yet extracted ze location of her home. I had, had so much else to do, it vas not so important at zhe time. Vhen he began to push for it recently I told him zat it vas hard to extract, despite ze lasso of truth, clearly a safeguard of her people. Von Strom believed me, but I am out of time now. Vhat are ve going to do?”

Glancing around I observe on the vall vas a secuity map of the surrounding area, part of it was shaded red, denoting an area of high resistance activity. “Of course! Ve vill get Vonder Voman out of here tonight und take her to zer resistance. They vill be able to contact ze allies und arrange to get her back to Amerika, und safety.”

“Zat is insane! Ze resistance vill kill us.”

“If you have a better plan Frauline then I would like to hear it.” Fausta shook her head. “Then pack some civilian clothes, ve haff vork to do.”
